Mother Nature’s not done with us

Minnesotans have been enjoying one of the warmest Februarys on record, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s over the past week melting away most of the snow that had accumulated since last November.

Whether this weather anomaly is the result of global warming or just a fluke, the weather has been having an effect on all of us. As noted elsewhere on this page, winter outdoors enthusiasts are frustrated with the lack of snow. And while cities and businesses may be saving money on snow removal, at the same time there are small businesses that relay on the income from snow plowing that are being adversely effected.

The warm weather has affected those who enjoy ice fishing. it is not safe to drive cars on the area lakes. In fact, it is not safe for large groups of people to go out on the lakes either, which is why St. Wenceslaus School has moved its ice fishing fundraiser scheduled for Saturday off of Cedar Lake and onto the public access on the east side of the lake... Better to be safe than sorry.

However, even though we’ve had springlike weather over the past week, that doesn’t mean winter is over. Not by a long shot. Forecasts for this Thursday night into Friday predict a large snowfall, perhaps 10 inches or more, depending on which weather forecater you listen to.

And just because we’ve had a mild winter that doesn’t translate into a mild spring. Remember, it was just four years ago that we were getting measurable snowfall well into April.

Mother Nature’s not done with us yet.
