Mother Nature's joke

By Chuck Kajer

No matter what your eyes told you earlier this week, it is springtime.

Mother Nature was at her finest this week, pulling an April Fool's prank on all of us unsuspecting Minnesotans, resulting in an early dismissal Monday and a full day off Tuesday for local school children.

The weather has thrown a wrench into season preparations for New Prague High School's spring sports teams - all except the adapted softball team, which continues to practice in the Central Campus gym for its opening game against Dakota United Thursday, April 3. Like the Minnesota Twins, the adapted softball team plays its games indoors. If the weather continues its strange twists and turns, look for this to be a busy spring for activities director Bob Scripture who had a relatively easy winter season with only a few cancellations. So much for easing into retirement.

Weather permitting, the boys tennis team is scheduled to host Albert Lea today (Thursday). With that match in doubt, all of the New Prague outdoor teams will get their seasons going next week. The baseball team is scheduled to host Holy Angels Tuesday, but conditions at the Memorial Park field indicate that game will also need to be postponed. The boys and girls golf teams are scheduled to host several home meets next week, including the New Prague Invitational Friday, April 11. Neither course was open as of this week. The track and field teams are scheduled to be at Mankato East Tuesday before hosting Waseca Friday, April 11, and the softball team is scheduled to play at Holy Angels Tuesday and at home with Prior Lake Thursday. Again, all of these activities are subject to change due to the weather.

Regardless of weather conditions, you can learn all about the spring sports season at New Prague High School with our special spring sports section in next week's edition of The Times.

Two other high school sports notes... at its board of directors meeting Tuesday the Minnesota State High School League has approved a mercy rule for football and basketball, beginning next season. If a team has a lead of 35 points or more in the final quarter of a football game or the final nine minutes of a basketball game, the clock will go to running time. The timing will revert to stop-start timing if the lead becomes 30 points or less. The league also turned down a proposal to reduce the number of weight classes in wrestling. That means Minnesota will continue to have 14 weight classes, the same as other states.
