MPCA gives final approval to West Jefferson project

One of the final pieces is in place for the work to start on the West Jefferson Lake Sanitary collection system.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) gave the final approval of the facility plan for the construction and operation of a Class SD wastewater collection system.

This system is designed to serve up to 140 homes, in which 124 parcels are currently signed up to have their wastewater pumped and treated by the city of Cleveland's wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).

The Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners received this information Tuesday, Feb. 27 during their regular board meeting.

"Basically we have the green light for the sewer project," County Administrator Darrell Pettis said. "This is good news."

The residents around West Jefferson have been working for a number of years for the opportunity to hook up to sewer system.

The West Jefferson Lake sewer project, according to the Cannon River Watershed Project, will construct a sewer line which will flow from West Jefferson Lake to the City of Cleveland.

Cleveland will provide sewage treatment using the existing municipal system.

Pettis said with the approval from the MPCA, the bidding process can begin.
