Mr. Langer was one of a kind

By Chuck Kajer

As someone who always read the newspaper from front to back, I was quick to sign up for Fran Langer's journalism class at New Prague High School.

I grew up just a few blocks from the Langers and knew who they were from an early age. As I got into high school, I learned that Mr. Langer was one of the more sought-after teachers at the school, and was also one of the most imitated. His mannerisms and gentle voice were easily mimicked.

Some students went into Mr. Langer's classes expecting not to have to do much work, that the class would be a breeze. In reality, the classes involved a lot of work and a lot of learning, but students were having so much fun and the information was presented in such a manner that you didn't always realize you were learning something.

As many of our readers know, Mr. Langer was inducted into the New Prague High School Hall of Fame last week. Sadly, the induction ceremony came the day after his funeral.

His son, Michael, stopped by the office and I had the chance to talk with him a bit. I told him a story I've told others, of how my first dollar in journalism came from Mr. Langer. He was holding up a copy of a newspaper and going over some of the stories in it.
