Musical a great escape

As far back as this writer can remember, New Prague High School has been known for excellence in its theatrical productions.

Going back to the days of director Ralph Pomije in the 1960s and ‘70s, and most likely before that, New Prague students have taken the stage and shown their acting and musical skills for parents, classmates, friends, community members and others.

The productions have involved hours of preparations in staging, construction of sets, setting up the sound and lighting systems and, of course, rehearsals. Many of the students developed a love for the theater. Some went on to act professionally or find other ways to make their living in the theater. Many went on to perform or participate in college productions or in community theaters. Over the next two weekends, the school’s theater department will present The Music Man, a classic production. More than 50 students are involved with the production, either on stage or behind the scenes.

We encourage our readers to check out The Music Man, and see the level of talent these students display under the guidance of Ben Thietje and staff members. It’s doubtful you’ll find a better value for an evening’s entertainment, and you’ll leave with an appreciation for what these students can accomplish when combining talent and hard work.

Stop by the school and experience the tradition. The young people of our community deserve to know that we value their hard work.
