Naval officer on leave surprises family at Easter service

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

Looks of awe, several hugs, happy tears and a standing ovation greeted Commander Tom Midtvedt as he surprised his wife Susan and four children during the Easter Sunday service at New Prague Lutheran Church.

Stationed in Afghanistan since July, 2011, Midtvedt had been planning since Christmas to surprise his family on Sunday, April 8, by coming home for a two-week leave. During that time he almost let his surprise slip, twice. Once was in an email string where he mentioned to a friend a surprise he was planning for Easter. Susan saw the string and asked what the surprise was. Midtvedt said he was sending some shirts and scarves to the children. The other time was when he was talking to Susan about when he would get a two-week leave after nine months, which he amended to 18 months.

With the surprise intact, he began making plans to fly out.

Getting out (of Afghanistan) is the hardest part
