Neisen leads State Women's Open by 5 strokes

Kenzie Neisen shot a career-low 9-under par 63 at Deer Run Golf Club in Victoria to take a five-stroke lead at the Minnesota Women’s State Open Tuesday, Aug. 15. 

Neisen, a 2014 New Prague High School graduate who will be be a senior at Oklahoma State University this fall, had two birdies and an eagle on the front nine to make the turn at 4-under par. She had five birdies on the back nine, finishing with three straight birdies. She has a five-stroke lead over Sarah Burnham. 

Neisen and Burnham are very familiar with each other. As high school juniors, they shared the MSHSL Class AAA title in 2013, with Neisen edging Burnham for the title in 2014. Burnham won state open in 2013, Neisen in 2015. 

The two teamed together in 2015 to win the Women’s State Fourball Championship. 

Four golfers are tied for third with 71, eight strokes behind Neisen. 

Taylor Ledwein, a 2016 New Prague graduate and also a two-time MSHSL champion, is tied for seventh with a 72. She will be a sophomore at Bradley University in Peoria, IL, this fall. Steffi Neisen, Kenzie’s sister and a 2010 NPHS grad, is tied for 26th at 5-over. She is a middle school teacher and an assistant golf coach at New Prague High School.  

The second and final round of the tournament was scheduled to take place Wednesday, Aug. 16, after this edition of The New Prague Times went to press.
