New coach impressed with softball talent
Ashley Walker began workouts last week with the New Prague High School softball team and so far is impressed with the talent of the Trojan squad.
The former Shakopee and Winona State standout takes over as head coach for the Trojans, replacing Nat Wagner. Wagner was at the helm of the Trojan squad for three seasons, including a state tournament berth in 2014. He is now an assistant coach at Valley City State College in North Dakota.
Walker’s squad has been able to get a few days of work in outdoors with the mild spring weather. The team is preparing for its first game, on Tuesday, April 12, when they host Le Sueur- Henderson, a state Class AA tournament team last season.
The Trojans are young - only one senior returns from last year’s varsity squad - But they have plenty of experience as their 2014 state tournament team included several eighth graders who are now sophomores in their third year of varsity softball.
