New Market wins 2 in opening weekend for DRS Baseball

After a Week 1 washout, the Dakota-Rice-Scott baseball league began play this past weekend, with New Market pulling off a pair of wins to shoot to the top of the Red Division standings. Lonsdale, Elko and St. Benedict also had wins in the five league games played over the weekend.

Four teams have yet to play this season, with Shakopee scheduled to host Union Hill Wednesday, May 7, after this edition of The Times went to press. Two teams open at home on Friday, when New Prague hosts New Market and Montgomery hosts St. Patrick. Faribault will play its first league game Sunday at St. Benedict.

Saturday, May 3 Muskies 4, Bulldogs 3 Trailing 3-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the New Market Muskies scored four runs to defeat Union Hill in the seasonopener for both teams Saturday, May 3, in New Market. Jay Chlan had a two-run double to provide the big blast, and the veteran Tom Carpentier also had an RBI single for the Muskies. Nate Rost went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Dana Kiecker started and went five innings, allowing two hits and striking out four. Nick Rost got the win, going four innings and allowing four hits while striking out four.

Sunday, May 4 Muskies 4, Irish 0 New Market went to 2-0 on the season with a 4-0 win over St. Patrick, Sunday at Bonin Field in St. Patrick.

Derek Bergstrom went six innings and struck out nine, with Nate Rost pitching three innings and striking out seven. New Market pitching held the usually potent St. Patrick bats to just four hits, by Wade Schuknecht, Colton Borwege, Seth Ambroz and Josh Simon.

For the Muskies, Nick Rost went 3-for-5 and Kyle Bergstrom went 1-for-5 with a two-run double. Mike Carpentier and Tom Carpentier both had two hits.

Simon went five innings and took the loss for the Irish, with Ambroz and Bill Dunker pitching in relief.

Express 8,Warriors 3 Andrew Lyke was the winning pitcher for Elko, as the Express defeated Veseli 8-3 in Veseli. Lyke pitched five innings and struck out two, with Glenn Parker and Ryan Van Duessen pitching in relief.

Ash Larsen got the scoring started with a two-run single in the third. Tony Gabriel, Parker, Kyle Kraska, Jason Grimm and Larsen added RBI singles for Elko.

Eric Steinhoff had two hits for Veseli and drove in all three runs. Matt Perkinson, Mike Bartusek, Travis Vikla and Chad Krenik also had hits. Casey Behrens started and took the loss, with Matt Perkinson pitching in relief.

Aces 5, Sox 0 Matt Tschida went 3-for-3 and Lance Anderson pitched five innings to get the decision for Lonsdale in a 5-0 win at Webster, Sunday, May 4.

Phil Tisdel earned a save, pitching four innings. Nick Nelson took the loss for Webster.

Saints 7, Mudcats 3 St. Benedict defeated Prior Lake 7-3 Sunday at Prior Lake. St. Benedict plated two in the eighth and four in the ninth to rally for the win.

Jeremy Heitkamp had four hits for the Saints while Michael Pauly had a big tworun triple in the ninth inning.

BJ Benz had given the Mudcats a 3-1 lead knocking in two runs via a double in the seventh. Heitkamp earned the win in relief. Ben Morrison pitched a complete-game for Prior Lake.
