New Prague’s city-wide cleanup starts next week

It’s time to empty out the basement, the sheds, the closets and garages. New Prague’s annual city-wide cleanup is scheduled for April 29-30 and May 6-7.

The event is sponsored by the City of New Prague and New Prague Sanitary Service and will be held over two Fridays and Saturdays. The first weekend, with curbside pickup in the southern (Le Sueur County) portion of the community is April 29-30, with the second weekend, with curbside pickup on the north (Scott County) portion of the city, will be May 6-7.

New Prague Sanitary will pick up items from the curbside from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the two weekends. To ensure pickup, items should be placed on the curb by Thursday night.

City crews will pick up tree trimmings and branches for chipping along the curb in New Prague. The trimmings and branches must be bundled and tied in three-foot lengths. Branches and limbs not bundled and tied, or those greater than three feet in length, must be brought to the Waste Water Treatment Plant, at 601 Twelfth Street NE, on Saturday, April 30 or May 7 only, from 6:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Also on those two Saturdays, New Prague residents can bring designated items to the New Prague Wastewater Treatment Plant at 601 12th St. NE for disposal. These items must be delivered between 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. People dropping off items must have a proof of residence such as a driver’s license or New Prague Municipal Utility bill.

Items that can be dropped off at the treatment plant include household appliances, couches, recliners or stuffed chairs, mattresses, box springs, car, truck and tractor tires with or without rims, TVs, console TVs, and other brown goods, such as computers and VCRs. Commercial appliances will not be accepted.

The first of each item brought to the treatment plant from each household is free. There will be a charge for each additional item. For example, if a person brings in a couch and two mattresses, the couch and first mattress are free, but there will be a fee for the second mattress.

No hazardous waste, such as paint, oils, acid, paint thinner, insecticides or fluorescent light bulbs will be accepted. Also not accepted as part of the cleanup will be demolition and/or remodeling materials, leaves, lawn clippings or household garbage cans.

More information, including a fee schedule for designated items, can be found in a flyer that is in this issue of The Times, the April 28 issue of the newspaper and the April 24 and May 1 issues of the Extra.
