New Prague man recovering from neck injuries in diving accident

A 23-year-old New Prague man is hospitalized at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, recovering from spinal injuries suffered in an accident at his parents’ lake cabin June 11.

Chris Hirdler, the son of Dale and Jayne Hirdler of New Prague, was at his parents’ cabin on Lake Volney, near Le Center, when, according to his mother, he did a belly flop into the lake from the dock. Apparently, his head struck the lake bed and he broke his neck at the sixth vertebra.

He was taken by Le Center Ambulance to Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague, then was airlifted to North Memorial, where doctors performed emergency surgery. His crushed C-6 vertebra had to be removed and replaced with bone material from his hip. His fifth and seventh vertebrae were fused together.

Doctors are optimistic that Hirdler will walk again. He is able to move his left leg and right toes.

Hirdler’s mother said on Monday of this week, during physical therapy, they had him standing up.
