New Prague woman gets makeover on Today Show

Amber Fischer of New Prague and her friend, Karli Cleaver of Nyssa, OR, had a once-in-a-lifetime experience last week.

The two, longtime friends who grew up together in Oregon, were chosen to take part in a “Best Friends Makeover” on NBC-TV’s The Today Show.

Amber said she submitted a form to apply for the makeover when she saw something on her Facebook feed.

“I filled it out on a whim… They called the next day, they were interested in talking to us some more,” Amber said.

She said she got the phone call while working out at The Fitness Center. “I saw a New York number and ignored it. They called a second time too. It wasn’t until I checked my voicemail that I knew what the call was,” she said. “My jaw dropped. I couldn’t believe it.”

She said Karli, her best friend for 22 years, had the same reaction when she called her.

The first contact with Today show representatives was on Thursday, June 2. The two sent photos and stories about their friendship to the show’s producers. The following Tuesday, they were notified that they had been chosen.

“We both got on flights the next day and by Wednesday afternoon we were in New York City,” Amber said. “They paid for airfare, sent drivers and put us up in the Midtown Hilton, right in the middle of Manhattan… walking distance to all the places you’d want to see. It was a neat experience.”

They had a 27th-floor room with a great view of the city, with most everything paid for.

“I think at the most, we spent about $50 of our own money, on dinner and a Tshirt,” she said.
