New signage in place on intersections south of New Prague

The Le Sueur County Highway Department has put new traffic controls on two intersections on the southern edge of New Prague.
The two intersections are stop signs along 15th Street SE (also known as County State Aid Highway 29), at the intersections with First Avenue SE (CSAH 60) and 10th Avenue SE (CSAH 3), turning both intersections into four-way stops.
The Le Sueur County Board approved the moves earlier this year.
County Administrator/Highway Engineer Darrel Pettis said the county asked the Minnesota Department of Transportation to do a traffic speed study in the area. For the intersection of 10th Ave. and 15th Street, the speed study showed that the appropriate speeds were in place (55 miles per hour) on County Road 29, but that traffic on both the north-south and east-west routes was about even. They recommended putting a four-way stop there. County Highway engineers and SEH Engineers, which does consulting work for both the county and city, agreed.
The same study showed the intersection of 15th Street and 1st Ave. SE was appropriately signed and a four-way stop was not recommended. However, Pettis said, due to public input and some pressure from residents, the board agreed to put a four-way stop sign at that intersection as well.
The stop signs were scheduled to go into effect on Wednesday, Sept. 20. The highway department has issued advisories asking people who travel in that area to take extra caution while using these intersections over the next few weeks as drivers become accustomed to the new traffic controls.
