Northfield tops Mahtomedi, heads to semifinals

Northfield's Cody Schmidt returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and led the Raiders to a 21-13 win over favored Mahtomedi in the first round of the state Class AAAA playoffs Friday at Edina.

Northfield (9-3) will take on top-ranked Orono (11-0) in the semifinals at 12:45 p.m. Friday at the Metrodome. Mankato West will face St. Michael-Albertville in the other semifinal game Saturday.

One other area team advanced to the semifinals. Holy Family Catholic of Victoria defeated Perham 42-36 in St. Cloud Saturday. They face Glencoe-Silver Lake at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at the Metrodome.

Other area teams didn't fare so well in the first round of the state tournament. In Class AAAAA, Lakeville South lost to Cretin-Derham Hall 49-7 in a game played at Griffin Stadium in St. Paul. In Class AAA, Le Sueur-Henderson lost to Glencoe-Silver Lake 42-6 Friday in Eden Prairie and Norwood-Young America lost to Caledonia 21-0 at Lakeville North.

The Prep Bowl is November 28 and 29 at the Metrodome.
