NP Police respond to false call of shooting at library
New Prague Police responded to the New Prague Library Monday afternoon, Aug. 22, after a phone call gave a false report that a person was shot and wounded at the library.
The call, which came in at 2:42 p.m., stated that there were five individuals with handguns on the premises. New Prague Police responded with four squads and two sheriff’s deputies, setting up a perimeter around the library, located at the corner of Main Street E and Lincoln Ave. SE. They made contact inside and learned that nothing had happened inside the building.
Police were at the scene for about an hour conducting an investigation and following up on leads.
It was determined that the call originated outside of New Prague from an individual that police had dealt with previously regarding mental health concerns. New Prague Police Chief Jim Gareis said officers are continuing the investigation and following up to assess any mental health concerns that need to be addressed with the individual
