NPFD responds to silo fire

The New Prague Fire Department, along with firefighters from Montgomery and Lonsdale, responded to a silo fire at the John Hoefs farm south of Union Hill Thursday, Sept. 16. New Prague was called to the scene at about 4:30 p.m. Upon arrival the department requested mutual aid from Montgomery for an additional tanker and from Lonsdale for use of their aerial equipment, since it is taller than New Prague's.

Corn silage was smoldering inside the concrete silo. New Prague fire chief Jerry Novak estimated more than 40,000 gallons of water were used to put out the fire, and firefighters were on the scene for more than four hours. Read more in the September 23, 2010, print edition of The New Prague Times.
