NPHS names new hockey coach

For the second time this summer has a new high school boy's hockey coach.

Earlier this week, John Barger accepted the position as head hockey coach. Barger has 26 years of experience as a head high school hockey coach in Jamestown, ND, Austin, St. Louis Park and most recently in Burnsville.

Darrin Sawchuk, who was head coach for the last four seasons, resigned after taking the team to the Section 6A championship game last season. He is now a special education administrator in the Bloomington school district.

Troy Ward was hired in May and worked with the team during the summer months, but he resigned in July after being named assistant coach of the Minnesota Wild's minor league hockey team in Houston.

Barger took Jamestown to four state tournaments and has been a state coach of the year in both Minnesota and North Dakota. He was the first-ever recipient of the Minnesota Wild high school coach-of-the-year award while at Burnsville.

Barger said he doesn't know a great deal about the New Prague program, but he is looking forward to getting started. He was scheduled to attend a booster club meeting Tuesday evening, Aug. 21.

I know that we're going to have a young team this year
