NPHS spring play cancelled

New Prague High School’s spring play “The Foreigner” has been cancelled. The play is a comedy that premiered in 1984. Set in Georgia it deals with a man who pretends not to speak English and discovers several secrets, one involving the Ku Klux Klan.
In a message that was sent out to parents and students from New Prague High School principal Lonnie Seifert, it was stated a student involved in the play had posted a captioned photo on social media of cast members in KKK costumes used in the final scene of the play to depict an evil force in the story. According to Seifert, “Administration was made aware of the posting, and the insensitive nature of this post.” The message stated that school administrators reviewed the social media post and conducted meetings with the theatre director and concerned community members. “We feel it is in the best interest of New Prague Area Schools to not present the show this weekend,” according to Seifert.
He concluded, “This situation will also allow us the opportunity to have conversations with our students, staff and community as we continue to develop and model our character traits of acceptance and respect for all students within New Prague Area Schools.”
