One Act features multiple plays within a play

This year’s One Act Play, “Cut” by Ed Monk, keeps its actors on their toes.

It is about a group of actors rehearsing a play within a play within a play. According to director Jackie Brockway, as the plot complications multiply, the line between actors and their characters blurs and they begin to forget who is playing whom and who is the real director.

“Then they can't seem to remember who they really are, as opposed to the people they are playing in any of the various scripts. Then things start to get confusing,” she said.

“Cut” is a play within a play within a play that overlaps nine times over. This is a challenge for the actors who need to have their lines, cues, and blocking perfectly memorized, develop and play multiple different characters that must exist (sometimes simultaneously) onstage with each other, and maintain excellent concentration.

One Act public performance - Friday, Jan. 27, 7 p.m., Montgomery Middle School Auditorium
