Orioles bats silenced by Mankato
The New Prague Orioles bowed out of contention in the State Class C baseball tournament Friday, Sept. 2, at Glencoe with a 2-0 loss to the Mankato Mets in losers' bracket play.
The Orioles, under manager Jerry Plambeck, had a great season, ending with a 23-12 overall record, winning two games in state Class C play and losing the last two by one and two runs. They made it to the final eight teams in the tournament.
Nate Rost, draftee pitcher from Faribault, pitched another creditable game for the Orioles, allowing only six singles and striking out six, but two of those hits in each of two separate innings were enough for a 2-0 Mets win.
Jake Krier and Alex Smith hit the two RBI singles for the Mets. Krier and designated hitter Josh Anderson had two hits each for Mankato.
New Prague was limited to three singles off lefthander Ashton Dorris, who went the distance for Mankato, and struck out eleven. Hits were by Dan Shetka, Ross Skluzacek and Tyler Seurer.
New Prague threatened in the seventh and eighth innings with men on base.
In the seventh, with a runner on base, Dustin Steinhoff crushed a long drive to left that went just foul. In the eighth the Orioles had the bases loaded with one out, but were unable to score.
