Packaging up a Gift of Caring

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

Girl Scouts from the New Prague area were busy Saturday, Feb. 25, at the New Prague American Legion Clubroom preparing a Gift of Caring for New Prague area service personnel.

The Gift of Caring project was part of the Girl Scouts annual cookie sale. When the scouts were out selling they asked people if they wanted to donate a box to soldiers. Sixteen Girl Scout Troops from New Prague sold 494 packages that will go to service men and women from the New Prague area and those who have relatives and friends in the area. Girl Scout Leaders Maria Hanson, Renee Hartman and Amy Milinkovich helped organize the event.

The idea to have the cookies sent to those service personnel with New Prague ties came about because of the recent deployment of one soldier. Command Sergeant Major Rich Wilson of the United States Army Reserve is a teacher at New Prague Intermediate School and was deployed in early January to participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The Girl Scouts were able to choose whether they wanted to have the boxes donated to service personnel or to victims of the hurricanes, which other troops around the chose to do.

During Saturday’s event Girl Scouts prepared cards that they drew and put messages in. Others wrote letters. The cards and letters were then put in boxes that the leaders and parents were busying filling with cookies and wrapping material to protect them.

New Prague American Legion Post #45 and New Prague’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5145 paid for the shipping of the boxes.

The Girl Scouts ended up with 50 to 60 cases of cookies that were sent to a soldiers not only in Iraq, but also to those stationed in the United States and Japan.
