Parents play key role in preventing drug use in children

Monday's presentation at New Prague High School by “Know the Truth,” regarding drugs and teens, was eye-opening, even to parents who are aware of the dangers of drug use by teens.

A 26-year-old woman from Northfield was one of the speakers. She talked about how growing up she never thought she’d be one to abuse drugs, but depression and low selfesteem led her to try marijuana during her senior year and led her to becoming addicted. Several years later, despite efforts to go clean on her own, she had a relapse and began abusing prescription medication. That led to her losing her job, dropping out of college, spending all her money on drugs and eventually becoming homeless. She told the approximately 200 people attending Monday night’s presentation that with her parents’ help, she went into treatment and also is getting help with her depression issues.

Parents are not to blame for their child’s problems with drug abuse, but they can play a key role in helping a child avoid or overcome issues with drugs. It all starts with communication.

When talking to teens about drugs and alcohol, Know the Truth advises parents to:

1 - Start talking early in life, and keep talking.

2 - Be prepared to talk about your past.

3 - Support your teen with role modeling and firm guidance.

4 - Consider putting your agreements in writing.

Chris Hirdler, Chemical Health Counselor at New Prague and Jordan high schools, organized the event held at New Prague High School. Much valuable information was made available to parents to help them be aware of all the signs of chemical abuse, ways to prevent it and how to keep the lines of communication open between parents and children.
