Pioneer Power acquires St. Joseph Church building

Chuck Kajer, Managing Editor

Nearly a year's worth of work concluded Tuesday, July 26, when the Le Sueur County Pioneer Power Association became owner of the St. Joseph's Church in Lexington Township.

The church, which was built in 1902, was closed two years ago due to declining membership. It became part of the St. Wenceslaus Parish earlier this year, along with three other rural churches in Heidelberg, Union Hill and St. Benedict.

Loren Riebel, a member of the Pioneer Power Association, says he approached the Pioneer Power board of directors with the idea of buying and moving the church to the association's showgrounds last year, and they encouraged him to pursue the idea. He sought out private donations to fund the move, separate from the Pioneer Power treasury.

There were times when we thought it wasn't going to happen
