Planning Commission looks at Health Care facilities downtown

The New Prague Planning Commission at its Wednesday, Oct. 25, meeting began looking at the background of an emergency interim ordinance. The ordinance had been approved by the New Prague City Council at its Monday, Oct. 16, meeting. The ordinance is in regard to assisted living facilities in the B-1 Central Business District as well as clinics and healthcare facilities with inpatient care in the B-1 Central Business District, B-2 Community Commercial District and all residential zoning districts. The ordinance allows the city one year to consider how to approach such facilities.

Planning Director Ken Ondich explained the ordinance stems from two inquiries earlier this month, one for the downtown district and the other in a commercial or residential area. The first inquiry was for an assisted living facility, although it would not be a typical facility and could possibly involve addiction treatment with residents ages 55 and older. The second inquiry potentially fits the definition of a clinic or healthcare facility. Ondich noted it possibly involves treatment for addictions with the assistance of medications. Also, it would involve considerable in-patient care where a person might be staying at the facility or visiting it for a month or longer.
