Planning Commission OK’s final plat for new school site

By Patrick Fisher

The New Prague Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously recommended for approval the final plat for Raven Stream Village First Addition at a special meeting on Monday. The plat includes the new elementary school to be built by New Prague Area Schools.

The plat is located on the west side of New Prague and is part of a larger housing subdivision proposed by Geiger Land Development, Inc. In addition to the school, the area includes a park and a few streets. Ken Ondich, New Prague City Planner, informed the commission the streets will include Sixth Street, 11th Avenue, First Street and Fourth Street NW, which will lead to the site of a future water tower.

Present at the meeting were representatives of the New Prague Area School District, Sue Meyer, whose family owns a feedlot near the area, and Mary Ann Ruehling, whose family owns and operates a heifer and dairy facility near New Prague.

The plat will now go before the New Prague City Council on Monday, June 20. It was the only item on the agenda for the special planning meeting.

Renee Christianson, New Prague City Planner, said that if the special meeting hadn’t been held work on the new school would have been held up for three weeks. The plat would have waited for approval at the planning commission’s regular meeting on June 22 and would then have been presented to the council at its July 5 meeting.

If the council approves the plat at its June 20 meeting the school district will be able to close on the property and begin construction on the new building. The school district is hoping to have the school open by the fall of 2006.
