Planning considers storage expansion at Chart

The New Prague Planning Commission unanimously recommended for approval a request from Chart Industries at the commission’s Wednesday, June 28, meeting. The request was to amend the business’ existing storage area to include all existing gravel surface areas at its property.

About a dozen people attended the meeting, some there for the public hearing that went with the request.

Planning Director Ken Ondich explained the requested area is located north of the new large tank manufacturing facility. He said this area is a unique situation since there are residential properties across the street. Ondich said city staff recommended approval with several conditions. These included the adding of a line of spruce trees north of the parking lot that was part of the new manufacturing facility. The trees are to be at least six-feet tall at their planting. Also, a sixfoot tall fence, running 100 feet, is to be built near the southeast access of the facility. The trees and fence are to provide screening for the residential homes and traffic along First Avenue NW.

The public hearing had one resident, Russ Sirek, who said he appreciated the trees. He felt the trees may not be enough and asked if a fence could be included with them. He had concerns that the expanded area for exterior storage was not a hard surface. He also asked if trucks would be using the access on the east side of the new facility to the site.
