Police arrest four juveniles for ‘car hopping’

Montgomery Police arrested four juveniles on Friday, Nov. 16 for “car hopping” and charged the youth with more than 15 charges, including weapons, drug, and drug paraphernalia, theft, possession of stolen property and disorderly conduct.
The incident happened at approximately 9:15 p.m. when police were dispatched to an apartment on First Street South for a reported theft from a vehicle. Police later located the four juvenile males near a convenience store in Montgomery.
The police questioned the four youth in the store’s parking lot and contacted four victims in Montgomery and Le Center who identified many of the 77 stolen items as theirs. Some items included a gold bracelet, a checkbook, cell phones, iPod, gloves, calculator, cash, sunglasses, eyeliner, and pool cues.
One of the juveniles also held 6-mm and 4.5-mm airsoft BB guns with BBs that he said he was carrying because “it is fun to shoot people”.
On another youth, officers found marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a white powdery substance that one youth said was his bi-polar medication.
The youth, who live in New Prague and Waconia and attend school in Shakopee, met up in Montgomery and were “car hopping” a phrase they coined to mean breaking into motor vehicles and stealing their contents.
The youth were later released to their parents.
The case was turned over to the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office for charges.
