Portion of roof collapses at Holy Cross’ New Market building

By Patrick Fisher

While the rains that the area received on March 30 may not have seemed very heavy, it was enough to cause damage to the roof of Holy Cross School’s New Market building.

The building - one of three used by the parochial school operated by Catholic parishes in Lonsdale, New Market and Veseli, is used for pre-kindergarten and grades three and four. The other buildings are in Veseli, with pre-kindergarten to grade two, and Lonsdale, with grades five through eight.

Mindy Reeder, the development/marketing director with Holy Cross, said that earlier this year repairs had been done to the roof, but due to improper drainage, water from the rain and melting snow and ice leaked through the roof, causing part of the roof and plaster to break through. Water then leaked through to the interior of the building, which is owned by St. Nicholas Church in New Market.

Two teachers were at the building before classes had the roof started leaking. Reeder said neither was in the area where the roof collapsed.

The third and fourth grade classes at the New Market building were moved to the Lonsdale building while the pre-kindergarten classes were cancelled for the remainder of the week.

An estimated 1,000 gallons of water came down through the roof. Damage was done both to the exterior and interior of the building. Crews from Advance Companies had to extract the carpet in some portions of the school and put down dehumidifiers and fans.

Reeder said that books and equipment were also damaged by the water. The school is waiting to see if they will have to replace some of the items or if they can be salvaged. Items that will have to be replaced include science books that were just recently purchased for the third grade class.

We were hoping that originally it would only take a few days of repair
