Pouring rain doesn’t dampen runners’ spirits

Not even the pounding cold rain stopped the faithful participants of the Le Sueur County Relay for Life 5K Run/Fun Walk on Saturday morning.

The event that raises money to fight cancer, started at TCU High School and took runners around Montgomery. Organizer Shauna Swanepoel said conditions were less than ideal for the event, but people still came out to support the fight against cancer.

“It’s pretty icky out,” she said. “I don’t even know if there was 30 because it’s too wet to even know or count.”

One of participants was Tyce Shook of Le Center. Wearing headphones and rainwear, the teenager completed the race in the pouring rain in honor of his mother, Ramona Shook, who is an EMT, and his grandmother who has cancer.

The event brought people from Faribault, Montgomery and Le Center. Casi Story and her father, Todd, both from Faribault supported their friend Swanepoel by participating in the event.

“It wasn’t bad. It only got bad when you were running into the wind at the finish,” Casi said.

There was no purple and white ballon arch to greet the runners at the finish line. Swanepoel said the wind and the rain broke it, so she took it down, but runners still received beverages and snacks to refuel for the day.
