Rewarding recycling
A group of women in Montgomery is turning unwanted plastic bags destined for landfills into something useful for the less fortunate.
For several weeks now, a group of ten women from Holy Redeemer’s Council of Catholic Women (CCW) has been creating mat-making magic by transforming plastic garbage/grocery bags into the sleeping mats that are given to homeless people in the Twin Cities.
“It’s a very nice project,” said Cathy Herrmann, one of the project’s volunteers. “It’s all donated time with free bags, and it’s a good way to recycle your plastic bags.”
Herrmann said the group creates each mat from 600 bags. The process includes many people who each have a specific job based on their skill level. It takes approximately 50 hours to complete one mat.
