Robert Marek, 85

Robert Bob F. Marek, 85, of Prior Lake, formerly of New Prague, died Friday, May 7, 2010, at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee.

Born May 4, 1925, in New Prague, Bob was a son of Frank and Mary (Jelinek) Marek. Growing up in New Prague, he attended St. Wenceslaus School. As a young boy, he loved music and was a talented pianist, with a special interest in big band music. Having a love for sports, Bob was a center on the football team and the catcher for the baseball team. He graduated from New Prague High School in 1943.

At the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served two years during WW II as a helmsman on the U.S.S. Chicago Destroyer. Upon returning from the service, Bob drove truck for a few years and later worked at Continental Machines for 21 years as a tool and die maker. He also worked in maintenance for the Scott County Sheriff's Department for 11 years. United in marriage at the Church of St. Wenceslaus in New Prague, he married Yvonne Krohn on February 12, 1955. One of Bob's greatest joys was building the family home on Spring Lake, where they lived for 54 years. After retiring, Bob and Yvonne loved to travel, and for the past 20 winters they enjoyed their retirement home in Florida. Bob had a love for the outdoors, especially fishing with his grandchildren. You could also find him cheering on the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. He was a member of the Prior Lake V.F.W. and the Church of St. Michael.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years; children Ann (Larry) Hibbard, St. Louis, MO, Doug (Sharon) Marek, Chaska, Nancy (Jim Wrobleski) Marek, Eagan and Lori (Jerry) Marek, Mound; grandchildren Greg Hibbard, Steven Hibbard, Matt Hibbard, Tim Hibbard, David Marek, Ryan Marek and Dave Wrobleski; a sister Frances Herban, Ludington, MI; a brother Phil (Bev) Marek, Rochester; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 18, at 11 a.m., at the Church of St. Michael in Prior Lake.

Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, with military honors.

Visitation will be held Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home in Prior Lake, and also one hour prior to the Mass at church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Prior Lake VFW Post #6208.
