Rost brothers’ 7 RBIs keep New Market unbeaten

Rain washed away three games from the Dakota- Rice-Scott League schedule, but the weather allowed for seven games to be played over the weekend. New Market remains atop the league standings, extending their record to 6-0 after a win over New Prague. Faribault is also undefeated, with a 3-0 record.

Saturday, May 14 Orioles 6, Saints 1 Timely hitting, good defense and great pitching gave New Prague the 6-1 win over St. Benedict on a cold Saturday afternoon. St. Benedict’s Johnny Dittman scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch in the third inning. New Prague would answer back with three RBIs from Dust Steinhoff, on a solo home run in the third and a single in the fourth that drove in Aaron Kes and Austin Bachman. The Orioles would add three insurance runs in the top of the ninth when Chase Buthe singled and Ben Buthe walked followed by a homerun by Justin Novak. Matthias Duevel took the loss for St. Benedict.

Sunday, May 15 Aces 6, Sox 1 Jason Kirschman drove in four runs, sparking the Lonsdale Aces to a 6-1 victory over the Webster Sox Sunday at Lonsdale. He singled in the first inning and homered in the sixth inning. The Lonsdale Aces took an early lead in the first, scoring two runs on a two-run single by Lance Anderson. Ryan Thompson got the win for the Lonsdale Aces. He allowed one run over five innings while striking out six and allowing just two hits. Ben Lazzari, allowed just one hit in four innings of relief. Jeremy Wieland took the loss for Webster. He lasted seven innings, walked three, struck out one, and allowed six runs. Webster’s Brett Hoffman went 2-for-3 with a double.

Coyotes 5, Saints 4 Shakopee defeated St. Benedict 5-4 in 11 innings at St. Benedict Sunday. The Coyotes drew first blood with Alex Johnson scoring on a bases-loaded grounder, and added a run on a fielder’s choice in the third. St. Benedict made it a 2-1 game on Tanner Oakes’ sacrifice fly, which scored Johnny Dittman in the fourth. The Saints scored three in the sixth, with Michael Pauly’s RBI double, a sacrifice by Noah Miller and a third run scoring on a throwing error. Shakopee tied it at 4-4 in the eighth on a tworun double by Johnson. Shakopee got the winning run in the 11th when Andy Lazzari scored on a throwing error on what would have been an inning-ending double play. Andy Pauly went 3-for-6 for Shakopee, while Dittman went 4-for-5 for St. Benedict.

Lakers 5, Irish 2 Jack Helgeson and Josh Simon were locked in a pitchers’ duel but neither would factor in the decision, as the Lakers defeated the Irish 5-2 in 12 innings. Singles by Evan Jensen, Adam Jensen and Dylan Valentine, paired with an Irish throwing error led to two runs in the top of the second. The Irish answered back when Jordan Goracke doubled to right, plating two Irish runners. Goracke was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple. That would be all the scoring until the top of the 12th. With two outs and nobody on base, Mitch Johnson, and Jack Helgeson singled. Joe Grote tripled to right, scoring the former. Grote ended 3-6, with a double and a triple. Matt Lane then singled home Grote, capping the scoring.

Mudcats 6, Warriors 3 Prior Lake scored three runs in the eighth inning to edge Veseli 6-3. Brad Schoenrock started for the Mudcats, going four innings. Jake Lehrer got the win in relief. Kody Hadler went seven innings for Veseli while Mike Bartusek was tagged with the loss. For the Mudcats, John Houston had three hits and Tony Loehr had the gamewinning RBI in the eighth.

Express 10, Mallards 2 Elko and Montgomery had a tight game through six innings with both starting pitchers allowing two runs apiece. The Express scored two on a home run by Dylan Thomas in the top of the seventh, finally chasing starter Aaron Dwyer, who went 6- 1/3 innings and allowed six hits while striking out four. In the top of the eighth the Express put the game out of reach, scoring six runs on six hits highlighted by a triple from Nick Kulla. Tyler Brekke struck out 11 in seven innings to get the win, while Grant Gunderson, finished the game for the Express.

Muskies 9, Orioles 5 After losing to New Market 23-2 a week earlier, New Prague came out swinging in the rematch, scratching across an unearned run in the first after Dan Shetka doubled, and another in the third after Justin Novak singled and scored on a Zac Dubanoski hit. Nate Rost buckled down and held the Orioles at bay until the seventh and Nick Rost hit a three-run home run in the fourth, followed by a Harvey Martin solo homer to put New Market up 4-2. New Prague regained the lead in the seventh, scoring three thanks to hits from Justin Novak, Dubanoski, Dusty Steinhoff and Dan Novak. Nate Rost delivered the back-breaker with a grand slam in the seventh as the Fish prevailed 9-5. The Rost brothers combined for seven RBIs. Derek Bergstrom pitched the final two innings to get his fourth save of the season.
