Ruby Faye (Telford) Lessin, 96

Ruby Faye (Telford) Lessin, 96, of Cambridge, and formerly of New Prague, died on Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at the Cambridge Medical Center.

Ruby was born in Edgerton on March 16, 1908, to James and Maude (Chapin) Telford. At the age of 6 months, they moved to Willow Lake, SD. She graduated from Willow Lake High School in 1925 and Pipestone Teacher’s Training Department in 1926. As a young schoolteacher, Ruby boarded with the John and Clara Lessin family, whose son, Harold, caught Ruby’s eye.

Ruby married Harold Lessin on June 1, 1930. In 1956, they moved to St. Louis Park where Stevenson Company employed Ruby. At a later date, Ruby taught in East Union School District in Chaska for three years. Ruby graduated from Mankato State University in 1962 with a bachelor of science degree in education. She began teaching first grade at the New Prague Elementary School and retired in 1973 after 30 years of teaching. In 1980, Ruby was named “Outstanding Senior Citizen of Scott County”. She was a charter member of Spirit of Life Church in New Prague. Ruby moved from New Prague to Cambridge in 2001 where she resided at Riverwood Village until her death.

She is survived by her three children, Phyllis Ward, Rapid City, SD, Roger Lessin, San Manuel, AZ, and John Lessin, White Bear Lake; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, who died in 1976; her parents; and three sisters.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Spirit of Life Church in New Prague with Rev. Don Turnwall officiating.

Pallbearers were Tom, Mike, and Mark Lessin, John and Scott Ward, David and Jeremy Holmquist, and Jason Sandberg.

Interment of Ruby’s cremated remains will be in Pipestone Cemetery at a later date.
