Save the Barn fundraiser is Friday

A dance Barnefit to raise funds to save the historic Novak barn will be held Friday, Nov. 30, at the Park Ballroom in New Prague.

Doors will open at 7 p.m., and music will begin at 8 p.m.

Gail Hunt heads the group that formed to save the barn, located on First Street SE, just west of the new ALCO store. She said a number of people have pitched in to help with the event.

Hunt's husband's former band, the Creekbones, will reunite, under the new name, Barnaby Jones. The band will play from 8 to 9 p.m. At 9:30 p.m., the band Jumping at the Woodside will play.

These bands play a variety of music - from rock to country to polka.

In addition to music, a number of other activities have been scheduled, including:

• An interactive performance by the Fair-Bow-Si-Do Square Dance Club and the River Bend Promenaders with Caller Larry Fruetel from 7 to 8 p.m.

• Tom Duban's Percheron horse-drawn hay wagon will be available for rides from 7 to 9 p.m.

• A cow costume contest

• A children's coloring contest

• Scruffy the Clown (Hermey the Clown's first cousin) will provide balloon animals and other entertainment for children from 7 to 9 p.m.

• Llama wool-spinning demonstrations by Pam Keister

• A silent auction.

There will be a variety of children's games, a New Prague Trivia contest and a silent auction. In addition, event T-shirts will be given out as prizes.

There will also be special presentations about Dr. E.E. Novak and the Novak Barn Foundation throughout the evening.

The property has been for sale for some time, but this summer talk about tearing down the barn spurred a group of local residents to organize and make a last-ditch effort to save the structure. The group began meeting in September and is working on a business plan and various fundraising efforts to try and save the barn.

The Novak Barn Foundation is a 501.3c charitable organization that is looking to acquire and renovate the barn, so it can be used for community purposes. Donations are tax-deductible. Hunt says in the event that they are not successful in purchasing and renovating the barn, donations will be refunded.
