School board authorizes referendum
The Tri-City United School Board officially authorized a special election to ask voters if they will help finance $18.69 million in district facilities improvements.
The School Board passed a resolution at its monthly meeting on Monday that set the special election for May 24, 2016.
Before the board unanimously approved the authorization, Superintendent Teri Preisler reviewed the referendum details and reminded the board that they came as the result of input from a Community Task Force on Facilities that explored the needs in the district.
The majority of the needs address lack of classroom space due to increasing enrollment.
In a Review and Comment document, which the Minnesota Department of Education needs to approve, it states, “The School District struggles with providing enough space for its programs. The district is also experiencing enrollment growth, and through their recent demographics study, enrollment is expected to increase in the future.”
