School board OKs choir trip

New Prague Area School Board members conditionally approved a trip by the New Prague High School choir to Chicago in early March. Choir director Rita Sapp was at the meeting to talk about the trip. Board member Dan Carlson asked about the educational reasons for the trip and also had several questions regarding school policy and chaperones for the trip. After a long discussion, the board voted 6-1 to approve the trip, with Carlson opposed. The approval was conditional on the addition of an administrative designee to chaperone.
Carlson said during Sapp's presentation he didn't hear any learning objectives or any educational benefit for the trip. He also felt there was a need for an administrator to go on the trip. Superintendent Craig Menozzi read the policy and interpreted it that an administrative designee required by policy could mean a teacher designated by administrators to act in that role.
In other matters
The board approved a quote from Climate Makers to extend the Teletral building automation system into the older portions of the high school. The system is currently in place in Raven Stream and Eagle View schools and in the new areas of the high school. The system will allow computerized climate control of the building from a centralized location. The cost of $238,145 is part of the Energy Bond referendum approved by district voters in 2006.
The board cancelled its November 24 regular meeting and replaced it with a workshop to go over several items.
The next meeting of the Strategic Planning Task Force will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18 at Falcon Ridge Elementary.
