School Board reviews enrollment, finances

Enrollment at New Prague Area Schools is running about 30 students more than what had been budgeted for during the current school year, according to figures presented to the New Prague Area School Board at its Monday, Jan. 26, meeting.

Operations Director Tim Rybak presented numbers to the board showing the enrollment projections, the actual budgeted numbers and actual enrollment. While the district had been working with projections of enrollment of 3,567 for the 2008-09 school year, the board chose a more conservative number of 3,510 when setting its budget.

Rybak said that enrollment as of January was 3,540, about midway between the budgeted and projected figure. Since state aid comes with each student enrolled, that means more income for the district.

Finance Director Dan Pyan presented a financial report on the district's cash flow status as of December 31. It showed each of the district's five funds and the current balance: General Fund-$262,327, Food Service $154,565, Community Services $179,803, Construction $3.02 million and Debt Services, $4.33 million. Altogether, the district had $7.95 million in funds at the end of January. Pyan explained that there was a $3.5 million debt service payment due in January and that $600,000 of the construction funds are what's left of the energy bond passed several years ago. He added that there were some expenses to pay on other projects, such as the high school addition, but that about $1.5 million was left to apply toward long-range planning.

Board chair Bob Reed asked Pyan about the energy bond, and said that the board would like to see an accounting of how the energy bond funds had been spent.

Pyan noted that the cash flow on the general fund had dipped into a negative number (minus-$545,199 on November 30). He explained that state aid payments come at certain times during the year, and one of those payments came during December.
