School district certifies levy

The New Prague Area School board has certified its 2013 levy at $10,110,205, an increase of $673,376, or 7.14 percent from 2012. The action came following the district’s Truth in Taxation hearing Thursday, Dec. 13.
Much of the increase is due to a voter-approved increase in the district’s operating levy. That referendum was held in November, 2011, but did not go into effect until the coming year.
Under the approved levy, school property taxes on a $200,000 home will be up from $969 to $1,071. However Finance Director Sandy Linn noted that home values have decreased, and some homeowners will be paying less in taxes in 2013.
