Scott Co. Relay goes well in new location

Construction at Shakopee’s Vaughan Field meant that organizers for this year’s Relay for Life of Scott County had to find a new location for the annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Going in, they were worried about how it would affect the event.

Turns out, there was nothing to worry about.

Ruby Winings, a member of the leadership team, said they were nervous about the move to Lion’s Park in Shakopee, but that everything went off without a hitch at this year’ sevent July 8.

Winings was honored for her years of service to the Relay for Life with a special plaque. Joey Skogrand introduced Winings, noting that she has been around the relay since the beginning, and even before that with the "Walk in the Park" event that preceded it in Shakopee.

This year’s event raised more than $90,000 to help fight cancer. In the 19 years of the event in Scott County, more than $2.5 million has been raised.

Speaking during the opening ceremonies, Wining stressed that fighting cancer was not just about fundraising, education and advocacy, but about public policy as well. She urged those attending to write their legislators to keep them from giving the tobacco companies a break from the cigarette taxes.
