Shakopee wins state volleyball title

Missota Conference and Section 2AAA champion Shakopee defeated Andover in three games to win its first-ever State Volleyball Championship.

The Sabers defeated Hopkins and Lakeville North on their way to the Class AAA title. Lakeville North won the third place game and Owatonna took the Consolation championship.

Shakopee was the first Missota Conference team to advance to the state championship game since New Prague did in 2001. The Trojans lost the title game to Eagan. The last Missota Conference team to win the state championship was Chaska, in 1991.

Two other area teams fared well at the state tournament. Jordan, the defending Class AA champion, lost their first match to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, but came back to beat Visitation and Hibbing to win the Consolation Championship in Class AA.

Faribault Bethlehem Academy took the Class A crown with wins over the Northern Freeze, Mayer Lutheran and Windom.

A new attendance record of 26,834 was set the 2007 State Volleyball Tournament. That was 4,714 more people than attended the 2006 tournament. The previous record of 23,826 was set in 2005.
