Sister M. Helene Schmitz, SSND, 93, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at Good Counsel in Mankato.
Sister Helene was born in 1920 near Raymond, IA. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1936 and professed first vows in 1940. In her SSND ministry, she served first as an upper grade teacher in several catholic schools in Minnesota and South Dakota, then as teacher of religious education in various parish catechetical programs. She also worked as a parish pastoral minster, especially to the elderly, at St. Wenceslaus Parish in New Prague from 1990-2006.
She is survived by a sister, Sister Dolores Schmitz, SSND, Mankato.
She was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers and two sisters.
The Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 10:30 a.m., at the Good Counsel Chapel in Mankato.
Mankato Mortuary assisted with arrangements.
