Snow gives us something to think about

About a foot of snow fell in the New Prague area, the largest single snowfall in about eight years. Such a snow event gives us some things to think about.

First - the power, and unpredictability of Mother Nature. The snowfall had been predicted for several days, but the weather forecasters continually tweaked the forecast. At first, it was supposed to come late Saturday, then Sunday, and finally, early Monday. It was expected to bring about six inches, then downgraded to four, then the route moved further north and we ended up with about 12 inches. It shows that while we can predict something will happen in terms of weather, we can never be totally sure. We need to prepare for the worst.

Second - In this community people care for each other. A short drive on Monday afternoon found several cars stuck in heavy snow along the side of the road. In most cases, there were two or three people, neighbors, friends or even perfect strangers, using shovels and helping the driver by pushing the car to get it out of the deep snow and into the traffic lane. A semi-truck attempting to turn onto Main Street by The Times office got stuck, and several people were out helping direct traffic while one passer-by, a driver with a four-wheel drive, used a tow strap to help pull the semi through the thick snow and onto Main Street.

Third - what a dedicated crew of street department workers we have. Crews started working early on Monday doing what they could to keep the roads passable. They continued to work into the early hours and, once the snow stopped, cleared roadways so that traffic in New Prague would run smoothly for those going to work or school on Tuesday morning. Drivers may have overlooked that on Tuesday morning, but the clear roadways were much appreciated.
