Special services has summer programs planned

Darren Kermes, Special Services Director

For those of you who have been in Minnesota longer than me, I have a question: Do you ever get used to the weather shifts? Going from school closing snowfalls to thunderstorms in a matter of just a few days still amazes me!

Our last snowstorm not only ushered out winter, it also marks the transition into the final days of the 2005-06 school year. As we look forward to summer, I am pleased to describe the programs we will offer some of our secondary students who experienced a degree of difficulty making progress during the regular school year.

New Prague Middle School will offer a new summer remedial program focusing on the core academic areas of reading, language arts and math.

Middle School students who failed to earn credit in these areas will be given more individually-tailored instruction throughout the summer. We are optimistic that this additional push will help our students attain success in these areas and return better prepared for the 2006-07 school year. Eligible students and their parents will be contacted later this spring regarding participation in the program.

New Prague High School will once again offer opportunities for students to recover lost credits in math, language arts, science, and social studies this summer.

Teachers work individually with students to tailor learning options designed to help them earn credits that were not obtained during the school year. This program will be coupled with intensive instruction designed to prepare students to take the summer basic standards make-up test. These programs have been successfully offered during previous summers at the high school with outstanding results. Eligible students and their parents will be contacted later this spring to discuss participation in either of these programs.

We are able to offer these opportunities for students through receipt of grant funds from the Carver-Scott Educational Cooperative. Carver-Scott staff members work with districts throughout the region helping design and support innovative programs for students. We greatly appreciate their support in offering programs designed to given students the additional help they need to master core academic areas.
