St. Nicholas Parish celebrates 150 years

St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Elko New Market is celebrating its Sesquicentennial with a series of events on September 6 and 7.

The celebration begins on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. with a Volleyball Tournament at Wagner Park in Elko New Market. At 5 p.m. kids ages 4 to 11 can participate in a Pedal Tractor Pull on Church Street, in front of the church. A parish Ice Cream Social will be held at Wagner Park from 6 to 8:30 p.m., followed by a dance on the church grounds beginning at 9 p.m.

Archbishop John Nienstedt, along with Father Daniel Haugan, pastor of St. Nicholas, and other former pastors of the parish will concelebrate the Mass of the 150th anniversary of the parish at noon on Sunday, Sept. 7. A buffet lunch will follow Mass. During this time the church and former school, including the adoration chapel, will be open for self-guided tours.

On Sunday afternoon there will be guided cemetery tours and tables available on the church grounds for people who want to display historical or genealogical material that ties to the parish. At 2 p.m. the St. Nicholas Knights of Columbus will hold a drawing to award prizes for their raffle. First prize is a Yamaha Rhino Side-by-Side ATV, as well as other prizes. Raffle tickets will be available at all events on Saturday as well as the day of the drawing.
