St. Patrick wins in state baseball; Elko, Lonsdale lose in first round

The St. Patrick Irish of the Dakota-Rice-Scott baseball league was the only team to survive first round action in the state Class C baseball tournament last week as they defeated the Moorhead Brewers, 6-3, on Saturday evening at Delano.

St. Patrick’s next game is with Carlos at Hutchinson this Saturday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. The winner continues in the tourney and faces the winner of New Munich vs. St. Cloud Orthopedic on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m., also at Hutchinson. Sunday’s winner and loser advance to the double elimination segment of the Class C tournament, Sept. 2-5.

Elko and Lonsdale did not fare as well as both dropped out the tourney with a first round loss.

The Express ended their season with a 7-1 loss to Raymond and compiled an overall record of 39 wins and only nine losses. Lonsdale was defeated by the Moorhead Miners 10-1 and finished with an overall record of 25 wins, 10 losses.

Thursday, Aug. 18 at Hutchinson

Raymond 7, Elko 1

Raymond jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead and stayed in front the rest of the way to defeat the Express, 7-1.

Four singles, a walk and three errors helped put the winners ahead in that first inning.

Kyle Knott and Mike Kragenbring led the Raymond batters with two hits each in four at bats.

Ty Dombeck batted two for four for Elko and Ash Larsen hit a double.

Elko was held to six hits by Dave Oehrlien, who went the distance and struck out eight.

Saturday, Aug. 20 at Dassel

Moorhead Miners 10, Lonsdale 1

The Miners totaled 15 hits in a 10-1 win over Lonsdale, collecting five in the first inning while taking a 3-0 lead.

Moorhead then added a run in the fourth inning on three more hits and posted three additional runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to put the game out of reach.

Ryan Krause was the hitting star for the Miners with three for five including a double and three RBI’s.

Shane Bushland was the winning pitcher as he went the route, limiting the Aces to three hits and striking out eight while walking four.

Lonsdale’s eighth-inning run came on a leadoff single by Chad Vosejpka, a walk to Kyle Kalina, a fly to right by Brad Vosejpka on which Chad tagged up and took third and a fielder’s choice by Tom Popp, which scored Chad.

Jake Lucas hit two singles for the Aces.

St. Patrick 6, Moorhead Brewers 3

The Irish used two big innings, the third and fourth, to score three runs in each, and then had to stave off the Brewers in the ninth inning for a 6-3 victory.

Four straight Moorhead hits to start the ninth made the score 6-3. After two outs and a walk and the winning run at the plate, reliever Scott Dose, draftee from Arlington, got the final out on a strikeout.

Jeff Bjerke and Paul Tisdel were the leading hitters for the Irish. Bjerke’s two hits drove in four runs and Tisdel batted three for five including a triple.
