Staying in touch is important to each student’s success

By Pat Pribyl, New Prague Primary School Principal

Communication between parents and teachers is very important to a child’s success in school. Most families are eager to participate in their child’s education and welcome specific ideas for doing so. It helps them to know what their child is doing in school so that they can connect with the content that is being covered in the classroom.

On Thursday, Feb. 9, students at New Prague Primary School will celebrate the 100th day of school for the 2005-06 school year. They will all be very proud and excited to have reached this very important milestone. Classroom teachers have designed special activities for students centering on the 100th day of school. This special day signals to all of us that the school year is quickly passing us by. Before we know it, flowers will be blooming, birds will be singing and spring activities will be back in full gear.

This time of year always leads educators to ask parents how involved have they been in their child’s education. Have you participated in Parent/Teacher Conferences? Have you attended any of your child’s school events? Have you volunteered in their school? How much do you really know about what is going on in your child’s classroom? For many of our parents, the answer to all of these questions would be yes. But for far too many other parents the opposite is true.

The month of February is recognized in the K-5 buildings as I Love to Read Month. Parents and other community members are welcome to visit our school and read to our students, or listen to them read to you. Our students are very proud of the reading skills they have acquired and would be more than happy to display their talents for you. Parents can support the schools’ efforts in the area of reading by requiring their children to spend more time on reading at home. Children in the primary school should read at home on a regular basis, usually 20 to 30 minutes each evening.

Being involved in your child’s education is the single most important way to provide a positive impact on their education. Many significant events will be taking place in our schools over the next few months. The month of March has been declared as Music in our Schools Month. We are extremely pleased with our musical talents and would love to share them with you.

Another very important upcoming event for the New Prague Primary School and Intermediate School is the K-5 Elementary School Carnival which will be held on Saturday, April 22, at the New Prague Middle School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The carnival is considered a major event at the elementary schools and impacts all of our students. This is the only fundraiser type activity conducted at the K-5 level. The proceeds from the carnival go directly to our students in the form of playground equipment, lyceums, library books, and many other wonderful items. If you are a parent of a K-5 student, we strongly encourage you to get involved in this event. You can find out more information by contacting the New Prague Primary School or the Intermediate School offices.

For those of you interested in becoming involved in our parent or adult volunteer programs, we encourage you to contact our parent volunteer coordinator at 952-758-1617. All adults, including grandparents, senior citizens, aunts, uncles, etc., are welcomed and encouraged to volunteer in our schools.
