The storm that wasn’t

Minnesotans were bracing for a major snow event last week, with 10 inches of snow or more expected to hit the area on Friday, Feb. 24.

And then,

it didn’t hit...

Well, yes it did.

While New Prague and points north went basically snowless, with only a few flakes falling in town on Friday morning - nothing to really be concerned about, just 30 miles to the south the snow hit as predicted, and even to the east, in Northfield, several inches could be found on the ground.

People on social media were complaining how the “weather terrorists” had struck again, getting people worried about a big storm that fizzzled out.

Only it didn’t. By Thursday evening, people were advised not to travel in much of southern Minnesota. The Rochester area was hit hard, with more than a foot of snow. The threat of severe weather was real, But the storm took a slightly different path that spared our area and the Twin Cities as well.

The danger in making fun of these near misses and dismissing them is that we’ll be complacent and not pay attention to them in the future. Weather forecasting is not perfect, but it is important to pay attention and heed the warnings. That doesn’t mean stay paralyzed with fear and not go outside when the weatherman tells us a storm is approaching. What it means is, be aware of what’s going on around you and, if necessary, take the proper precautions.

Don’t use this event to dismiss the next storm warning. That one could be spot-on.
