Street work progressing well

By Patrick Fisher

Work on New Prague's street reconstruction projects has gone relatively well lately.

Dennis Seurer, New Prague Public Works Director, said all the curb and gutter has been finished on the Central Ave. S. area, and it was expected that crews would finish grading soon so the first layer of bituminous blacktop would be put down.

Unlike the other five streets being worked on, Central was being changed from a dirt street to a paved street. The other streets, First Street SE, Second Street SE, Third Street SE, Lincoln Avenue S and Columbus Avenue S, were all reconstructed.

Seurer said of those streets everything but Second Street SE has the first layer of blacktop already down. On Second Street crews ran into some bad soils that required extra subcutting to take it out and replace it. Since the city is dealing with streets in some of the older parts of town it is not always known what kinds of soils there will be, and that can cause trouble.

Hopefully that will be completed this week and we’ll have the bituminous down before Dozinky
