Swimmers continue to show improvement at first meets

The Montgomery-Lonsdale/New Prague swim team continued to show improvement as they competed in their season opener against Mankato East Tuesday, Aug. 30 and two days later against Prior Lake/

The Redbirds hosted Red Wing Tuesday, Sept. 6. Results for this meet were not available by press time.

The Montgomery-Lonsdale/New Prague team will host Shakopee on Thursday Sept. 8 for Parent’s Night. On Monday, Sept. 12, the team swims at Waseca.

Cougars 99, Redbirds 75

Swimming coach Josh Franz said the first meet of the season went close to as expected when the Redbirds hosted Mankato East. He said there were some small surprises though.

“The 100-yard breaststroke and backstroke swimmers had better then expected times with times that were close to mid-season times of last year,” he said. “This was surprising because we did time trials and the times they made were significantly slower.”

Coach Franz said it will be difficult scoring points this season because of the small size of the M-L/NP team.

“It is difficult at this time filling all our varsity spots,” he said. “The younger girls looked promising and I expect significant improvement from them as the season progresses. Ready or not they will be expected to step it up soon.”

Lakers 99, Redbirds 58

The Redbirds travelled to Prior Lake September 1 and faced off against the Lakers.

Franz said the Lakers have a very strong squad this season and the Missota Conference looks to have several teams that could make runs at the state championship, maintaining the conference’s dominance in girls swimming.

He added that the Redbirds continued to show improvement as the girls on this small young squad continue to find their way.

“They have been working hard to refine their skills and improve their fitness,” he said. “The divers continue to make rapid progress and should be a bright spot for the Redbirds this season.”

Correction

The fall sports section in the September 1 issue of The New Prague Times had the wrong name for the diving coach for the Montgomery-Lonsdale/New Prague swimming and diving team. The coach is Hannah Kick, who is a 2004 graduate of New Prague High School and was the first member of the MLNP program to qualify for the state tournament, as a junior in 2002. The Times regrets the error.
