Take a seat, any type of seat

Walk into the classrooms of Kristen Munden and Abby Brockway at TCU Lonsdale and you might think you are in a playroom or lounge. Instead of traditional desks, the classrooms are filled with bean bags, wobble chairs, pillows, exercise balls and comfortable chairs for the 25-plus students.

Welcome to “Flexible Learning Spaces” an innovative type of relaxed seating that gives students more options while helping them focus and even enjoy school more. Munden loves the idea and said the options make the children more productive in the classroom.

Lonsdale Principal Sarah Klitzke reiterated the program’s effectiveness when she explained it to the TCU School Board on October 10. She said teachers were given the funds from a research study for their classrooms, and some chose to spend it for flexible seating. She said the pilot program is an action step in the district’s "Empowering Learners" plan to provide active learning environments.
